Exciting news for our Longboat Key community! Florida Power & Light (FPL) has announced that the long-awaited undergrounding project is on track to be completed by the end of 2024. This ambitious project, which began with an initial completion date of 2022, faced several delays but is now picking up pace with renewed commitment from FPL.

What Does This Mean for Longboat Key?

By the end of this year, you can expect all existing electrical poles to be removed, significantly enhancing the aesthetics and safety of our beautiful island. The completion of electrical conversions is anticipated by early October, with final pole removal by December 31.

Director of Public Works Isaac Brownman shared that FPL has introduced several new measures to expedite the project. Longboat Key’s switching orders can now bypass other areas and are approved in larger groups, thanks to a dedicated staff member for our project.

FPL's new approach demonstrates their dedication to seeing this project through. Although the goal is to complete electrical conversions by October 1, FPL is pushing to ensure they meet this target. Regular updates will be provided to commissioners and residents about the project’s progress and when properties will be energized.

While the timeline is promising, it is contingent on the storm season. With an active hurricane season predicted, any significant storms could cause delays as resources are redirected to affected areas.

Last year's Hurricane Idalia caused some underground transformers to fail due to saltwater intrusion. In response, FPL will raise these transformers on 24-inch pads starting mid-July, a process expected to take about a month. They will monitor the effectiveness and decide if further measures are needed.

In addition to these updates, the project is currently $6 million under budget, including the cost of new backlit street signs added by the town.
