At Team Renick, we're passionate about supporting our local community and sharing inspiring stories. Today, we bring you fantastic news from Save Our Seabirds (SOS), a local sanctuary dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of injured seabirds.

Flooding Challenges and Recent Storm Impact

In mid-June, Sarasota experienced a severe storm that brought about 9 inches of rainfall, causing significant flooding. SOS's campus on Ken Thompson Parkway wasn't spared. The flooding was so extensive that several birds had to be evacuated from their enclosures. Executive Director Brian Walton mentioned that this was the most severe flooding they've encountered, surpassing even the hurricanes they've weathered.

A Lifesaving Grant

To address this long-standing issue, SOS recently received a $10,000 grant from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. This grant marks the beginning of a large-scale project to reconstruct the campus's drainage system. While the grant won't cover the entire project, it will fund the installation of a new drainage system in five upcoming aviaries and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive solution.

New Aviaries and Environmental Stewardship

The new aviaries are a crucial part of Walton's vision for the campus. These structures, costing about $30,000 each, will be made from durable materials like aluminum and flexible wire rope mesh. Each aviary will feature an individual drain to prevent clogging and flooding. The primary focus of this project is to ensure clean water and minimize the campus's impact on Sarasota Bay.

Looking Ahead

This grant and the drainage improvements are just the beginning. Walton is working with DSDG Architects on a master plan for the campus, which includes a new hospital and better facilities for both the birds and staff. These enhancements will ensure SOS continues to provide a safe haven for seabirds in need.
