The Longboat Pass Bridge, a vital link for our community since 1957, is on the verge of a significant transformation. Our town commissioners have officially recommended replacing the current bridge with a mid-level bascule bridge. This decision follows extensive public input sessions and community discussions facilitated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Understanding the Options:

The proposed alternatives for the new bridge include:

Low-Level Bascule Bridge: Standing at 23 feet, this option ranges from $147 million to $158 million.

Mid-Level Bascule Bridge: At 36 feet high, this is the preferred choice, costing between $153 million and $165 million.

High-Level Fixed Bridge: A 78-foot structure, which has faced significant opposition due to its size and impact on nearby residences.

Community Concerns:

Residents, particularly those from the Northgate condominium complex, have voiced concerns over the proximity and height of the proposed bridges. The high-level fixed bridge, in particular, was deemed impractical and out of character with the Longboat Key community.

Commissioners' Standpoint:

Our commissioners have emphasized the importance of a bridge that reflects our community's character while ensuring safety and functionality. They advocate for a mid-level bascule bridge that will minimize traffic disruptions and blend seamlessly with our townโ€™s aesthetics.

Next Steps:

FDOT will continue to refine the design, considering ways to reduce the bridgeโ€™s width and its impact on the surrounding areas. The final decision is expected by winter 2025, following the completion of the Project Development and Environment study.
