Exciting developments are underway for Longboat Key as we anticipate the opening of our very first county-operated public library in late 2026. This project marks a significant milestone for our community, enhancing the Sarasota County library system that currently boasts 10 libraries.

Modern libraries have evolved far beyond being mere repositories for books. As Renee Di Pilato, Director of Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources, explains, libraries today serve as vibrant community hubs. They offer a myriad of services ranging from book lending to author talks, tech workshops, and creative spaces equipped with sewing machines and 3D printers.

In 2023 alone, Sarasota County libraries welcomed 1.3 million visitors, facilitated 2.3 million item checkouts, and hosted around 2 million Wi-Fi sessions. With dedicated spaces for all age groups and interests, libraries have become integral to our community life, catering to everyone from infants to retirees.

The upcoming Longboat Key library will feature core library spaces, a childrenโ€™s nook, community gathering spaces, and potentially enhanced amenities like a larger meeting room and outdoor terrace, depending on successful fundraising efforts.

The Longboat Key Foundation aims to raise $3.5 million to enhance these facilities, adding to the $11.1 million construction cost covered by Sarasota County. Naming rights are available for major donors willing to contribute significantly to this project.

This library is not just about books; it's about community, creativity, and lifelong learning. Stay tuned for more updates and be a part of this transformative journey for Longboat Key.
