Longboat Key is taking a proactive stance on disaster preparedness with its 22nd Annual Disaster Preparedness Seminar, set for June 5. This year's theme, "Stay Informed and Be Prepared," highlights the importance of readiness and awareness as we enter another hurricane season.

The seminar will be held at the Longboat Key Harbourside Ballroom from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m., with registration starting at 3 p.m. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be provided. We're excited to welcome Brian LaMarre, meteorologist-in-charge with the National Weather Service in Tampa and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Gulf of Mexico Regional Collaboration Team Lead, as our keynote speaker. His insights will be crucial for understanding storm risks and preparation strategies.

The event features a lineup of expert speakers focused on storm preparedness and risk management. Last year's seminar drew over 100 attendees and included powerful presentations from local and state emergency management leaders. One standout moment was a video presented by Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce President John Lai, showing the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in 2022. This impactful presentation underscored the importance of evacuating if a hurricane is projected to make a direct hit on Longboat Key.

Despite Hurricane Idalia not making a direct hit last year, its storm surge caused significant flooding around the island. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness. The Climate Adaptation Center's forecast for the 2024 hurricane season predicts 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes, with at least six being major hurricanes.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce is actively promoting this event to businesses specializing in disaster planning and recovery. Vendor tables are available for $250, offering recognition during the event and advertising on marketing materials.
