In Longboat Key, the safety of our residents and visitors is a top priority. With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, it's crucial to stay informed about current bicycle regulations and how they impact our community. Here’s an in-depth look at what you need to know:

Current Bicycle Regulations

Town staff in Longboat Key have been actively increasing awareness about bicycle regulations, especially concerning e-bikes, due to safety concerns. Recent reviews by town commissioners revealed that existing signage about bike rules and speed limits may be ineffective, necessitating more outreach.

Key Regulations Include:

Right-of-Way: Bicyclists must yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when passing.

Speed Limits: The speed limit for bicycles on sidewalks is 10 mph. New signs along Gulf of Mexico Drive clearly state this limit.

Sound Devices: All bicycles must have a sound operating device, such as a bell.

E-Bike Specific Regulations

E-bikes are categorized into three classes:

Class 1: Pedal-assisted, up to 20 mph.

Class 2: Throttle and pedal-assist, up to 20 mph.

Class 3: Pedal-assisted, up to 28 mph.

E-bikes exceeding 28 mph are considered mopeds and are not allowed on sidewalks.

Community Engagement and Safety

Our town’s commitment extends beyond just regulations. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our community. Despite the challenges in enforcing the 10 mph speed limit, our Vice Mayor and Police Chief are exploring effective solutions.

Your Role

We encourage all residents and visitors to stay within speed limits and be mindful of others. Together, we can make Longboat Key a safe and pleasant place for everyone.
