It's a bittersweet moment for Sarasota as we bid farewell to Hob Nob Drive In, an iconic establishment that has been a staple of our community since 1957. Co-owner Cary Spicuzza, who has lovingly managed the restaurant since 1991, recently announced the closure, marking the end of an era.

Hob Nob Drive In: A Journey of Dedication and Passion

Cary's journey with Hob Nob Drive In began when he was just 34. After working as a waiter at Marina Jack while pursuing his master’s degree in business, he took a leap of faith that would forever change his life. For over three decades, Cary and his wife, Debora, who handled the restaurant’s finances, dedicated their lives to making Hob Nob a beloved dining destination.

The Challenges Leading to Closure

The decision to close Hob Nob Drive In did not come easily. Several factors influenced this outcome:

Post-Pandemic Economy: The landscape of the restaurant business changed drastically after COVID-19. Cary shared that last summer was the first time in 33 years that Hob Nob experienced a financial loss.

Rising Costs: Inflation has driven up prices, making it challenging to maintain profitability. Fixed costs have soared, requiring higher sales to stay afloat.

Labor Market Struggles: Finding reliable staff has become increasingly difficult, with wages rising but profit margins shrinking.

Lease Expiry: The lease for Hob Nob’s location expires on June 30, adding another layer of complexity to the decision.

Reflecting on a Legacy

Despite these challenges, Cary looks back on his time with Hob Nob with immense pride. "It's been a great run," he says, reminiscing about the busy Fridays and the loyal customers who made Hob Nob a cherished part of Sarasota's dining scene.

What's Next for Hob Nob?

While the physical restaurant has closed, the Hob Nob legacy will continue. Cary and co-owner Annette Gargett, who has been with the business for 29 years, are planning to launch a food truck. This new venture will keep the Hob Nob spirit alive, allowing fans to enjoy their favorite meals without the demands of a brick-and-mortar establishment.
