As part of our ongoing commitment to keep the community informed, we’re excited to share the latest updates on the Broadway Street roundabout project here on Longboat Key.

Background:

Recently, Longboat Key Public Works Director Isaac Brownman provided an important update to the Manatee County commissioners regarding significant changes to the roundabout’s design. The initial design underwent a 90% inspection by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which identified concerns with the existing roadway banking. This critical feedback led to the decision that the project, as it was originally planned, couldn't proceed. Consequently, the project team had to go back to the drawing board to address the intersection's elevation.

Design Challenges:

“There was no ability to proceed with the design we had,” explained Brownman. FDOT made it clear that they wouldn’t approve a permit for the initial design. This necessitated a comprehensive redesign, starting in October 2023, with Kimley-Horn leading the efforts at a cost of $158,000.

Key Changes:

Due to the elevation issues, the redesign extends the project approximately 900 feet in each direction and includes significant drainage improvements. These modifications aim to ensure a safer and more efficient roadway.

Looking Ahead:

In the coming weeks, the town will submit the revised plans to FDOT. Brownman expressed optimism, saying, “We’re really hopeful for a much more favorable outcome because they explained it will be, provided we do these things.”

Funding and Timeline:

FDOT has committed $1.685 million towards construction. However, with the new design requirements, the total project cost is expected to rise. The final design is anticipated to be completed by fall or winter of 2024, with construction beginning in early 2025. The construction phase is expected to last between nine to twelve months due to the complex changes required for the roadway elevation.
